A policewoman in Colombia has been hailed a hero after saving the life of a newborn child who had been abandoned in woods near a small village in west Colombia.

Officer Luisa Urrea, who recently became a mum, was alerted to the presence of the newborn baby after a concerned member of the community named Edinora Jimenez investigated sounds she heard emanating from the forest.

Devastated to realise the sounds she heard were a baby's anguished cries, 59-year-old Edinora explained: “I was collecting some oranges when I heard something crying. I thought it was a cat until I looked closer and saw that it was a baby girl.”

The infant, who was discovered with her umbilical cord still attached, was perilously close to starvation and hypothermia when Officer Urrea arrived on the scene and made the decision to nurse the abandoned infant.

Dismissing the notion that her reaction was the act of a hero, Luisa explained: “I'm a new mother and I have milk and I recognised the needs that this poor little creature had.”

With the infant having been placed in the care of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare, an investigation is currently underway, with officials asserting the child's mother could face attempted murder charges.
