Do you need a break?

Being a mum is a full-time, 24-hour a day job, so while we’re never really on a break from being parents, we still need a bit of chill out ‘us’ time.

We love you more than anything, but it’s simple really kids. Mummy no have break. Mummy crawl into press and have meltdown.

Here are 20 very good reasons why it’s necessary for our sanity to take a bit of time out, drink a chilled glass of rosé and take a break from this: “MUUUM! MUUUUM! MUM where are my trainers? Mum he won’t let me play! I don’t want to eat this! I want ice cream! I hate you mum!”

1. Because we’re on call 24-hours a day. Our ears are always pricked for some sort of disaster, like a packet of Cheerios all over the floor or a masterpiece crayoned all over our eggshell walls.

2. We’re still ‘us’. And we need a reminder of that once in a while – whether it’s a trip to get our nails done (in fluorescent pink obvs) or a spot of lunch with the girls.

3. Because we never stop cooking. Dinners, breakfasts, brunches, big lunch, small lunch, baby lunch, morning snack, midday snack, bedtime snack, picnics, suppers – you name it, we’re making it.

4. ‘Cos we’re dog tired. And we deserve a rest. Simples!

5. Because being a mum is stressful. We need a spot of pampering every now and then to help chill us out and recharge our batteries. God knows we need those batteries in full working order!

6. Because goo gaa won’t cut it. We love talking to our kids, even if our conversations mainly consist of chunks of vowels (gooh gooh gahhh!) but it’s SO important that we have adult conversations too, ones that aren’t necessarily about the price of nappies, or weaning.

7. Because time alone is a rarity. It doesn’t have to be anything amazing; we’re not asking for a week-long trip to the Maldives here (although we wouldn’t say no) – all we want is a bit of time to ourselves where we don’t have to worry about another person, whether that’s a cup of coffee in the garden, an hour to read a magazine or a stroll by ourselves.

8. Because we need a bit of romance in our lives. Romance goes out the window a tad when you become parents. Baby puke and scolding teenagers for leaving mouldy cups around the house can put paid to that. But spending time alone as a couple is SO important; it gives us time to reconnect, to talk about things other than the kids and of course,  to snog a bit.

9. Because it makes us feel amazing. When we take some time to ourselves to chill, we return happier, healthier and more relaxed. Which helps us cope much better with the daily stresses of parenthood.

10. Because we need to think about ourselves for a change. Sometimes we feel like we’re going to crack. So when that happens, it’s imperative we take a step away. As mums, we’re always looking after other people, and in doing so we neglect to look after ourselves.

Do YOU need a break? 'Cos we sure as heck do!
