We all know that having a newborn in the home means you are going to get very little sleep. But despite this there are plenty of people who don’t seem to think before they open their mouths when meeting a sleep deprived mum.

Make sure you don’t stumble up or say the wrong thing by taking note of these 10 things not to say:

1. "Are you tired?"

Only say this is you don’t mind a few evil stares or digs...

2. "Couldn’t you take it in turns?"

We’re pretty sure they thought about how to make the situation easier... No matter how sincere you are your input isn’t helping!

3. "I’m really tired..."

Don’t make this about you. This is not about you.

4. "I know how you feel"

Unless you were up all hours last night you don’t know how she feels, and no, recalling a time gone past is not helpful...

5. "Have you not got them into a routine?"

Red alert, red alert! Never, ever say this.

6. "Mine was sleeping through the night from that age"

Are you looking for a medal?

7. "Have you tried the crying out method?"

A. This doesn’t work for a newborn. B. They are crying because they are hungry. And C. Are you really asking that...?

8. "They’ll eventually sleep through"

This doesn’t help the situation at hand. At all.

9. "Don't you love the quiet time?"

It’s not quiet time: Baby is crying, you’re crying and your other half is snoring...

10. "Why don’t you sleep when Baby sleeps?"

When Baby sleeps mums do all the other things they can’t do when Baby's awake.

So what should you say? “I’ll take Baby while you grab a nap...”
