Coconut oil has surged in popularity in recent years, and not just for kitchen use. In fact, it's great for treating skin problems, including on babies and toddlers.

Yep, really. The small molecular structure of the oil means it gets absorbed easily through the skin. For that reason, it’s great at restoring damaged or disease skin.

Here are just a few ways that coconut oil can help your child’s skin…

Hay fever

If your child suffers during the summer months, rub some oil on the inside of their nostrils. The pollen will cling to the oil.

Bruises

If your little one has a bruise, apply the oil directly to the bruise. By reducing the swelling and redness, the oil will give the healing process a big boost.

Stings

If your child gets a sting or insect bite, just rub some onto the sting/bite. After a while, the itching and burning sensation will begin to subside.

Burns

Apply straight away to any burns and keep doing so until the burn heal completely. Not only does it speed up healing, it also reduces the chances of permanent scarring – your tot will thank you for that as a teen!

Baby acne and scaly skin

Though not usually irritating for your child, scaly skin can be annoying. Rub a bit of oil on the affected area and this will inject the skin with the moisture it needs.

Croup

Many mums swear by a mixture of coconut oil and essential oils rubbed on their child’s chest. Croup can be painful for kids so why not give it a go.

Nappy rash

Because it’s so smooth and light, coconut oil is ideal for treating nappy rash. Plus, it’s got no harsh chemicals so it’ll be nice and comforting on little bums.

Massage

If your baby is in any way sore, or just needs a bit of comfort, nothing beats a massage. Add some coconut oil and your tot will be in heaven. It’s soothing, relaxing, distracting and great for a bit of bonding!

Sun burn

The sun can do serious damage to vulnerable young skin. If your child gets burned out and about, rub liberal amounts of the oil onto the affected area, and keep repeating it until it dies down.

Ear infections

Pop a few drops inside your child’s ear twice a day. This will help to relieve the pain that comes with infections, and will also help to fight the infection itself.

Teething pain

Rub directly onto your child’s gums. Tried and tested by mums exhausted by the screams of agony.
