A family court judge has ruled that a local council breached human rights by taking a newborn from his parents and awarded them £11,250 in damages.

The baby was taken into care after hospital staff overheard the dad expressing "unorthodox" views on sterilising bottles.

The judge said: "It was suggested that the mother had no family support, and that the father was expressing unorthodox views about the need for sterilisation of bottles, and the benefits of formula milk.”

The couple had not been referred to social services prior to the baby's birth, despite the fact they both had mild learning difficulties according to The Telegraph.

An emergency hearing about the "long-term parenting capacity of this mother and father" was called for four days after the birth but the family was not informed.

The baby was returned to his family after three months and has been thriving since.
