22-year-old mum of one, Jess Evans, passed away from cervical cancer in February of this year despite visiting her doctors nine times with abdominal pain, bleeding and fatigue.

Her symptoms began shortly after she gave birth to son, Riley but doctors refused to do a smear test as there was “no cause for alarm” given her young age.

Her own mum, Marie, is now advocating for the Government to lower the age of smear tests from 25 to 16: “I want more awareness of cervical cancer, I know every cancer is important but I want to see leaflets out in GPs, I want to visit schools, more information about the HPV vaccine.”

Marie continued on to say that she doesn’t blame anyone: “I’m not blaming anyone else for the fact she got cancer. But she was fobbed off time and time again. She had three bouts of surgery including a hysterectomy. Jess has gone but I don’t want any other mothers like me to have to go through this.”
