While the last thing most of us want is to judge other women doing this crazy thing we call motherhood, sometimes it happens without us even thinking about it.

We can look at how another person is parenting, and because it’s totally different to our approach, we can find ourselves thinking it’s the “wrong” way.

Here’s why we need to realise there is no right or wrong way – and why in 2017 we should pledge to be more open-minded and supportive.

1. Because everyone is different

Mums come from all different backgrounds and cultures, and in many ways, our experiences make us who we are. So it stands to reason we are all going to parent differently. Just because someone is doing something we don’t understand, or wouldn’t do ourselves, doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

2. Because we need to support each other

Motherhood is stressful enough without having the added pressure of people judging how we’re doing it. We women need to have each other’s backs – and should focus on building each other up, not tearing each other down. Being a mum shouldn’t be a competition, so instead, focus on making it a supportive, shared experience.

3. Because we can learn from one another

Keeping an open mind and realising that it’s not “our way or the highway” can actually be hugely beneficial. If we accept that different ways of parenting are just as “valid” as our own, we can learn from other mums, just as they can learn from us.

4. Because it’s hurtful

Yep, if someone is judging how we’re parenting, we’re going to feel like crap, plain and simple. We’re all doing our best on a daily basis, so if our efforts are being sneered at, or ridiculed or just plain bitchy-judged, all that’s going to happen is another mum is going to feel rubbish. None of us should be sitting on any high horses.

5. Because we’re already hard on ourselves

Our natural instinct is to worry we’re not doing things right – so the last thing we need is a judgmental mum confirming that for us.

So here’s to a New Year mamas, judgement free!
