We all know that breaking up with someone is never easy, and the weeks and even months after can be traumatic and stressful as you try to move on.

In fact, according to science ending a relationship can actually have a lasting effect on your life, in ways you probably never even considered.

1. Friends and family have a 75% chance of breaking up as well

Humans tend to imitate each other and when you see your friends or family enjoying the single life it’s hard not to want the same for yourself, especially if problems already exist.

2. You experience withdrawal symptoms

Love is like a drug, literally, and when you break up your body goes into a type of withdrawal. And while it can be tough breaking the habit, at least when you are in a relationship with someone you love you can reap the rewards of a physical high when you’re simply near them.

3. Your financial situation can worsen

Sadly, even in this day and age, women are still earning less than men, so when you break up your wallet can be hit - hard. However, men are more likely to end up lonelier, and, statistically speaking, tend to turn to alcohol.

4. It can take an average of three months to feel positive about your split

While that may seem like a really long time if you’ve just recently broken up, it is just an average of the time it takes to accept things and feel like you have grown as a person.

5. You may feel actual physical pain

Breaking up can cause you to experience muscle spasms and tightness due to the stress, chest pain and puffy eyes – emotional tears are more watery  and cause your eyes to swell and puff up.
