Separation anxiety is a phase that a lot of babies go through when they begin to understand the difference between someone being there and when they are gone.

While it usually occurs when you leave the house to go back to work or to simply enjoy a break, it can also happen when you are in the home but not in the same room as them.

It can be a little upsetting to know your baby becomes upset when you aren’t there, but it is a sign that your little one has formed a healthy bond with you. Here are five signs to look out for:

Clinginess

Babies who experience separation anxiety can become quite clingy towards you or your partner, often not wanting you to put them down even if you are in the same room as them. They can reach out to you or refuse to go to another person if they are aware that you are leaving.

Crying

While a baby crying is not always associated with separation anxiety, if they are constantly upset and looking for you while you are away from them or out of their sight it can be a sign that your little one is experiencing it.

Making strange

Making strange is when your son or daughter cowers or hides away from people they don’t know. While a lot of infants go through this phase it can be a sure sign that your little one is going through separation anxiety, as they only feel safe with you.

Easily comforted by you

If your little one’s crying or distress stops as soon as you come in the door or pick them up, it is a sure sign that they are suffering from separation anxiety.

They cry when being put to bed

It is common for babies to cry when they are being put to bed but it is also a sign of separation anxiety, especially if your youngster used to sleep in your room and suddenly they are in their own bed or they are awake when you leave.

It is good to know that this phase does pass eventually. Good luck mums!
