She recently broke down on TV as she opened up on the heartbreak of having her children live in a different country to her, and now actress Kelly Rutherford has taken a major action to get her young son and daughter back.

The 46-year-old Gossip Girl star is a mum to eight- and five-year-old children who, under the orders of a Californian judge, were sent to live with their father in France. Kelly remains in the US.

After a number of emotional TV appearances, Kelly recently launched a petition asking the White House to help her in her mission to bring her kids back to the US.

Kelly ran an event last weekend to help gather signatures for the petition, with a number of her former co-stars showing their support for her by speaking at the event.

The petition, which was published to the We the People website, hit its key goal of 100,000 signatures yesterday; this is the amount of signatures needed to garner a White House review of the petition.

A number of celebrities took to their social media channels in the past few days to help Kelly hit her target, including Kim Kardashian.

Posting on Instagram last night, Kim wrote: “I know I don’t know you Kelly Rutherford but as a mom I feel your pain and I wish you the best of luck! I hope you see your babies soon!”

The decision for Kelly’s children to live with their father, Daniel Giersch, came after a six-year custody battle between the couple.
