Thanks to the Internet, even prom proposals have taken how you pop a question to your significant other to another level. Queue the fireworks, flash mobs or casually getting on one knee at the Met Gala.

The narrative for wedding proposals perpetuated in the media, TV programmes or movies is ones of perfect surprises, pretty tears and big audiences of strangers clapping and wishing you well.

When that translates into reality, it can live less up to the Hollywood hype, commence the ugly crying, months of suspicion and at times, your other half just getting it plain wrong.

This is what Amy Schumer discussed in her stand up sketch, which detailed her so-called “worthless” proposal, by her now-husband Chris Fischer.

Owning the stage on Saturday Night Live, the comedian started in her opening monologue detailing her surprise wedding which happened earlier this year.

As her world has changed from a single gal to putting a ring on it, she reminisces about the fact that she can no longer draw on her dating experiences for laughs.

“Some of you may have heard I got married this year,” she said.

“Some people are like, ‘What are you going to talk about now in your stand-up? All you talked about was getting railed’”.

Schumer continued: “I’m a little sad. I’m never going to get a ‘u up?’ text again. Not like they were rolling in, but it was nice to know someone was thinking about me.

“I once got a ‘u up?’ text and I wrote the guy back, and he texted me, ‘Sorry, wrong text.’ I was like, ‘Me too, I’ll just cancel my Uber, who cares?’”

Schumer won’t be hanging up her comedy mic just yet, as she went onto talk about how the infamous proposal came around.

Forget the perfect wavy locks, the Instagram picture perfect makeup, Amy was in her nightly attire, which included earplugs and a night mask when she awoke to her chef boyfriend popping the question.

“The way that my now-husband proposed was so worthless. It was such a dumb proposal. It was morning, I was still asleep, he threw the box at me and said, ‘I got you this.’

“But that’s a realistic proposal,” she added.

“I feel like in all the movies and TV shows, it’s always a guy getting down on one knee and the girl’s always shocked. She’s like, ‘I didn’t even know you liked me!’ You’re going to spend your life with this dude, and you didn’t even know if he liked you?”

Schumer also joked she and her friends were all tying the knot in their mid-to-late 30s despite the fact they “probably can’t have kids” anymore, throwing some subtle shade at the media’s obsession with women’s ovaries.

“The girls I know, I’m from New York – we all got married in our mid, late 30s. So the guy would propose and all my friends are like, ‘Oh now? Now you’re ready? That I probably can’t have kids? Great. Cool.’”

Schumer added the reason for popping the question wasn’t because: “You’re not in love, you’re tired. And I know all your passwords, that’s what’s happening,” pretending to throw some shade at her husband.

The comedian’s stand up has caused a stir on social media, with many of her fans starting a debate over her comments.

“You can base a whole marriage on the engagement proposal,” wrote one user.

“If it had no effort or no romance, then your marriage will have no romance and no effort from your partner. Sorry Amy, good luck.”

Another viewer added: “The marriage won’t last.”

However, others thought the way he popped the question was a sign of their strong love and thought it was much more authentic than a staged proposal.

“This is amazing,” tweeted one.

“Morning’s suck – bad breath, messy hair. That’s some strong love!” added another.

“This is so true and relatable,” a user weighed.
