Our thoughts are with the family of US vice president, Joe Biden, today after it was announced his son, Beau, had lost his battle with brain cancer.

The 46-year-old former attorney general of Delaware was diagnosed with the condition less than two years ago and tragically lost his fight for life yesterday.

The dad-of-two has been honoured by his family since his tragic passing, with his father, Joe, saying: "It is with broken hearts that Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill and I announce the passing of our husband, brother and son, Beau, after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life."

Paying tribute to his son's immediate family, the devastated vice president went on to say: "We know that Beau's spirit will live on in all of us - especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children."

Speaking out following the tragic news, the President of the United States, Barack Obama, said: "Michelle and I humbly pray for the good Lord to watch over Beau Biden, and to protect and comfort his family here on Earth."

Joe Biden, who was by his son's bedside when he passed away, spoke with incredible dignity when describing the man he knew, saying: "His absolute honour made him a role model for our family. Beau embodied my father's saying that a parent knows success when his child turns out better than he did. In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known."

With heartbreaking honesty, Beau's family revealed the extent of their pain, saying: "The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words."

Our hearts go out to al those affected by Beau's death at this devastating time .
