While social media has been the platform for some amazing announcements this week, a BBC presenter took to Twitter to share some bad news with her followers last night.

BBC Two and former Radio 5 Live presenter Victoria Derbyshire yesterday revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is due to undergo a mastectomy in the coming weeks.

The 46-year-old, who is a mother-of-two, shared the news with her almost 50,000-strong following last night.

“Hi, have been diagnosed with breast cancer & am having a mastectomy in a few [weeks]. Family, friends, work & NHS staff are being brilliant,” she wrote.

She added: “Will be doing the programme as much as possible during treatment in the months ahead.”

Needless to say Victoria, who currently fronts a daily news and current affairs show, was inundated with well wishes and kind messages after breaking the news.

BBC’s health correspondent, Jane Dreaper, was one of the first people to respond to the news, tweeting: “Really sorry to hear that, but I know you’ll do a great job in staying strong. All the best x.”

Our hearts go out to Victoria and her family at this difficult time, and we wish her all the best with her treatment and recovery.
