Adoption agencies across many states in the US have declared they currently have a shortage of volunteers – or ‘temporary caregivers’ – to nurture newborn babies as they await adoption.

And one such agency, Spence-Chapin in NYC, has launched an Interim Care Provider programme to recruit volunteers to care for these babies in their homes.

Successful applicants must be available for the bubbas 24/7 and upon taking up the role receive training on newborn care, roles and expectations, and other needs of the children.

According to Ruth Feldman, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv, cuddling is crucial for babies’ early development.

“Every mammal has to be cuddled in the first days and weeks of life,” Feldman told TIME. “This builds up the bodily systems that are sensitive to a physical presence.”

But hey, science aside it’s pretty much a given that babies need cuddles right?

And we think we are the ones for the job! Now, all we need is to figure out how to move our lives to America…
