When experts advise us to always wash our fruit before eating it, they’re not just paying lip service: there is a real, important reason behind this warning.

One mum who has proven this in alarming fashion is Brooke Rose, the Australian blogger behind Wildfire Health.

Brooke recently took to Facebook to share a warning about the importance of washing our fruit before eating it ourselves or handing it over to our children, as we truly don’t know what chemicals or germs could be on its surface.

As an experiment of proof, Brooke took a regular apple and ran it under hot water. Turning the bowl and the apple to the camera, she proceeded to point out just how much natural wax – which is pretty much invisible to the naked eye – came off.

Admitting that she was ‘frightened’ at the thought of her children consuming all of this wax, she later qualified her true message: that we don’t know what is on the surface of our fruit, and we need to wash it before giving it to our children to eat.

“I'm not saying anywhere that apples are poisonous, nor to stop feeding them to your kids. The hot water was used for visualisation purpose. When you pick up an apple from the supermarket and give it straight to your child to eat, I'm expressing to you that perhaps we aren't aware what's ON our apples,” she explained.

She added: “It's not just its 'natural wax', which I am aware there is a natural wax on some apples. Our fruit and veg is bombarded with many chemicals which are still there when it hits the shelves. That's all I'm saying, not scare mongering.”
