It has been eight months since Angelina Jolie shocked us all by filing for divorce from Brad Pitt, and this week, the actor is sharing his side of things for the very first time.

The 53-year-old has opened up about his ‘solemn’ life and giving up alcohol in a candid new interview with GQ Style.

Brad, who only mentioned his estranged wife once during the interview – to praise her forthcoming movie – got emotional as he described daily life without his children in his house.

“This house was always chaotic and crazy, voices and bangs coming from everywhere; and then, as you see, there are days like this: very…very solemn,” he explained.

Indeed, Brad was so shaken and sad after the divorce proceedings were filed that he couldn’t bring himself to stay in the house by himself, and resorted to sleeping on a friend’s floor.

Brad and Angelina have six children together: Maddox, 15; Pax, 13; Zahara, 12; Shiloh, 10; and eight-year-o ld twins Knox and Vivienne. The star’s regret over the divorce was clear as he touched on how it affected their lives.

“I heard one lawyer say, ‘No one wins in court’…Fortunately, my partner in this agrees. It’s just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart,” he said, admitting that he has given up alcohol as he battles his own ‘weaknesses and failures’.

When asked how he endeavours to keep himself going, Brad insisted that ‘family comes first’ every time.

“People on their deathbeds don’t talk about what they obtained or were awarded. They talk about their loved ones or their regrets – that seems to be the menu. I say that as someone who’s let the work take me away.

“Kids are so delicate. They absorb everything. They need to have their hand held and things explained. They need to be listened to. When I get in that busy work mode, I’m not hearing. I want to be better at that.”

The former couple, who were married for two years before separating, reportedly reached a custody arrangement in November. Under the deal, all six children were to remain with Jolie, while Pitt was given visitation rights.

The deal followed allegations of abuse on Pitt’s part, which were reportedly investigated by authorities at the time.
