We’re all about empowerment here at MummyPages, so when we saw an inspiring post shared by a brave 19-year old with Crohn’s disease, we just had to share.

Aimee Rouski decided to share a raw, personal post on her Facebook page to let other people who have illnesses know that it’s nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about – and that they’re still beautiful despite the challenges, often physical, that they face.

“I've wanted to do this for a while because I always see body posi posts for weight, but not many for disabilities / invisible illnesses,” she wrote.

“First off I have Crohn's disease, it's a serious incurable illness that nearly killed me, not just a stomach ache like most people seem to think. A person with Crohns will go through many different treatments including surgery, and it's the surgery I want to touch on now.”

In her post she shared three photos: one showing her colostomy bag, which she had attached after surgery left her with a permanent ileostomy, no large intestine, colon, rectum or anus; another showing scars on her thighs showing where her thigh muscles were removed for plastic surgery on her wounds; and a third, poignant picture showing she’s just a normal 19-year old girl.

And while no doubt a colostomy bag is a difficult thing for a teenage girl to accept, but strong and inspirational Aimee has taken it in her stride, and she wants others in her position to do the same:

“I've always been okay with the stuff that has happened to me, but some people have real difficulties accepting these things so I just want to say this. No one will know unless you tell them. People who know will still love you and still find you beautiful. Your illness is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.”

What a brave young lady. We are in awe of her decision to speak out on this topic with the aim to raise awareness and help others going through the same thing.

You go girl!
