Many women who breastfeed believe if they become ill or if their baby is sick they must stop breastfeeding; however this is not the case. It is always advisable to continue breastfeeding your baby during an illness. It is also very rare that a mother suffering from illness needs to stop breastfeeding. There are only a few serious illnesses that require a mother to stop breastfeeding.

During any common illness such as cold, flu, sore throat, mastitis or a tummy bug, mum should continue to breastfeed. If you have to take medication your doctor will be able to prescribe something suitable for use while breastfeeding. Many medications are safe to take while breastfeeding but if in doubt consult your G.P.

If you are sick with the flu or with a cold the best thing you can do for your baby is to continue breastfeeding. Remember, you were breastfeeding your baby before you even knew you were sick. Breastmilk will not transmit any illness to your baby but it does contain antibodies specifically designed to target your illness. These antibodies will help prevent your baby from getting sick. By stopping breastfeeding while you are sick you are increasing the risk that your baby will become ill.

It is important that if you are taking any medication that you drink enough fluids as medication can deplete your milk supply. To avoid any depletion drink plenty, nurse often and avoid/limit medications that deplete milk supply (e.g. antihistamines)
