According to emerging reports, Britain is steps away from scrapping the hugely controversial tampon tax which sees feminine hygiene products classified as a 'luxury'.

It is understood that the Chancellor is currently brokering a deal with Brussels which would facilitate the abolishment of a tax which has been brought to worldwide attention in recent months.

Reports suggests that George Osborne expects an announcement in the coming days which will confirm that the UK will no longer impose a tax on tampons - very welcome news to campaigners and charities alike who have done much to highlight the worrying and potentially harmful implications of the tax.

Commenting on the recent developments, Mr. Osborne told the BBC that he acknowledges the furore surrounding the issue, saying: "I perfectly understand people’s anger at paying the tampon tax."

"I said we would get agreement that we could reduce this rate to zero. I think we are on the verge of getting that agreement," he continued. "I think we are going to get that agreement in the next few days, we hope."

As it stands, the 5% tax on tampons, which dropped from 17.5% in 2000, is the lowest possible VAT rate allowed under EU law.
