Many women have what is known as flat or inverted nipples – nipples that don’t ‘stick out’ enough for your baby to latch easily. The best advice if you are one of these women is to speak to a lactation coach or your doctor or nurse, who can advise you how to get around the problem.
Most women who have inverted nipples solve the problem in one of a number of ways:
Pumping directly before breastfeeding
Using nipple shields initially to allow the baby to latch (not a long term solution as it can reduce milk production)
Breast shells, that encourage the nipple to ‘stick out’ more (usually started during pregnancy, so that your breasts are ready when your baby arrives)
Special exercises designed to help you draw the nipple out
