Most of us would assume if someone was struggling in the water we’d recognise it straight away – but this incredibly powerful video of a child drowning in a public pool is a reminder that it’s not the case.
The real-life incident shows a child struggling after he falls out of his float, but no one around him has noticed. In fact, we didn't notice him during our first watch and had to replay it again to get our heads around what happened.
Luckily in this case a lifeguard spotted the child and jumped in to pull him to safety, but the video is a sober reminder that it’s not always easy to spot someone drowning. And you’ll notice that the child never cried out for help, because when someone is drowning, a mixture of panic and gasps for air means they CAN’T.
And while this video is scary stuff, it’s a brilliant reminder to always keep an eye on our children when they’re in the pool or the sea. All it takes are mere seconds for tragedy to strike.
