Former Countdown star Carol Vorderman has paid tribute to her beloved mother, Jean, following her passing this week.

The 56-year-old took to social media to announce that Jean had lost her battle with cancer at the age of 88.

“Some days are tough, today was one of them. Today was my amazing mum’s funeral…Rest in peace, Jean Vorderman,” she tweeted, adding, “You will always be loved.”

Carol’s sad news was met with an outpouring of support on the micro-blogging site, with her celebrity pals sending on messages of love.

“You had such a phenomenal mum. Only met her a few times but she oozed pride and love for you all,” wrote fellow presenter Gabby Logan.

Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt chimed in: “Love you and sending huge hugs.”

News of Jean’s cancer battle first emerged in March, on Mother’s Day, when mum-of-two Carol shared an upsetting social media status with her legion of followers.

“A precious Mother’s Day,” she wrote. “This week, Mum and I found out she has terminal cancer. She’s 88, beautiful inside and out, and I love her beyond measure.”

She went on to share a series of family photos – of herself and Jean, and Jean with all of her children and grandchildren – revealing that Jean was taking a positive attitude towards her diagnosis.

Jean had previously battled cancer of the ovaries, skin and kidneys, and admitted that she did was not prepared to undergo invasive treatment for a third time.

In an interview with The Mirror, she said: “At my age, I don’t want to undergo any further operations or chemotherapy treatment which can’t cure these new cancers anyway.

“Now, my family and me will concentrate on being happy and celebrating the time we have together. I’m refusing to let them be sad.”

Carol, who is mum to  25-year-old daughter Katie and 20-year-old son Cameron, insisted after the diagnosis that her mother was her main focus. She even cancelled her training to become the ninth woman to fly across the globe by herself.

She told the Express at the time: “Mum is now my priority and that includes above flying and other things. Luckily, my brother and sister are helping to look after her, and we are making her happy and comfortable between us.

“I was meant to take off to start my solo flight in about six weeks’ time, but my head isn’t straight at all, and certainly not good enough to take on that difficult challenge right now.”

We’re sending Carol and her family lots of love at this very sad time.
