The exact cause of open angle glaucoma is unknown but there are certain factors which are needed to trigger the process which leads to increased pressure and the nerve damage which causes loss of vision.

There are also some medical conditions which can lead to secondary glaucoma. These conditions include:

  • Diabetes (people with type 2 diabetes should be screened regularly for glaucoma)
  • High blood pressure
  • Migraine
  • Extreme nearsightedness
  • Previous eye surgery
  • Some forms of arthritis
  • Leukaemia
  • Sleep apnea

People who suffer from conditions which are known to trigger glaucoma should have their eyes tested frequently as early detection is the best way of preventing vision loss.
