Congenital ptosis is caused by the poor development of a muscle. It is more common in older adults where the muscle that lifts the eyelid thins and the eyelid drops. It occurs with age, trauma, or a neurological condition such as cerebral palsy or muscle weakness (myopathy).  It is unclear as to why congenital ptosis occurs in children but occurs when the levator palpebrae superioris muscle doesn’t form properly. This muscle is responsible for lifting the eyelid. There are some indications that ptosis can be genetic or can also be caused by birth trauma.
