When it comes to our childrens’ diets, it’s a constant battle to make sure that their getting the best from the meals.

With every day that passes there seems to be a new food being labelled ‘unhealthy’.

And while it may not be news to anybody, breakfast can be the toughest meal to get right.

Running 20 minutes behind schedule, school bags going missing and kids dragging their heels are all common symptoms of a mum’s morning, and many of us turn to cereal as the quick and easy fix.

However, new research is showing just how damaging that can be for our kids.

A study based on the annual National Diet and Nutrition Survey show that children in England consume half their recommended maximum daily intake of sugar at breakfast alone.

With cereals being the biggest culprit, sugary drinks and spreads have also crept into our childrens’ first meal of the day meaning their consuming about 11g of sugar before the first school bell rings.

“Children have far too much sugar, and a lot of it is before their first lesson of the day,” said Alison Tedstone, Public Health England’s chief nutritionist.

“It’s crucial for children to have a healthy breakfast, but we know the mornings in a busy household can be fraught.”

With more than one in five children falling into the overweight or obese category, sugar consumption has been a big issue for children’s health campaigners over the past few years.
