A lot of women dread the day when their period arrives, with many being forced to take to their bed with the hot water battle in the face of debilitating cramps.

While calling in sick on account of your period is simply not an option for the majority of us, women in China will soon be able to avail of a monthly ‘menstrual leave’.

According to a report in national newspaper The People’s Daily Online, women living in the Eastern Chinese province of Anhui who suffer with bad menstrual cramps during their period will be granted one to two days off work every month.

The decision was brought into law during an annual meeting of local government last month, and will be rolled out in March.

In order to avail of this leave, women will be required to present their employer with a doctor’s note, and any employer found in breach of the new provisions will be fined.

Also under consideration is the introduction of one hour of ‘breastfeeding leave’ per day for mums with babies under the age of one.

Given how debilitating cramps and other menstrual symptoms can be, we’re sure this is very welcome news for many women.
