While we soak up the rest of the Christmas cheer, let's spare a thought for those who have had a difficult - and in some cases, tragic - few weeks.

One such family is that of Karla Leanos, a mother-of-three who passed away on Christmas Eve after being involved in a car accident.

The 26-year-old Chicago woman was seven months pregnant when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road. Tragically, Ms Leanos died at the scene, but emergency services were able to deliver her baby - a boy - safely.

The child is said to have stabilised on Christmas Day, and he is expected to survive after the ordeal.

Hailing the tot as "a miracle baby", a bystander who witnessed the accident recalled that the driver did have a green light, but he failed to stop in time for Ms Leanos as she crossed the road.

Although the driver is reported to have fled the scene, he was tracked down and police have since charged him on two counts: driving under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

Our hearts go out to the family of Ms Leanos, and her 'miracle baby' will remain in our thoughts.
