Cold sore season is now upon us, and it is the bane of many ladies’ lives. But do you know what it is or what to do if one pops up?

Here's your 101 on cold sores:

What is a cold sore?
A cold sore is caused by the herpes simplex virus and is a small pimple or blister that pops up on or just at the edge of your lips. Some can become quite big while others are small and barely noticeable.

What triggers one?
Once you have the virus you will always have it but that doesn’t mean you’ll have a permanent cold sore on the side of your mouth. The virus will usually stay dormant but pops up during times of stress, when you are tired or sick.

How to stop it?
Once you start to feel any tingly sensation you need to do something. You can pick up a cold sore remedy in your local pharmacy and apply it to your lips according to instructions. Alternatively, boost your immune system with a cup of Echinacea, dab the area with cold milk, take your vitamin C tablets or use a little aloe vera gel.

How to cover it up?
In the meantime, hide it with concealer or liquid foundation. Put a little onto your finger and dab on the area. Cover your lips with a little foundation and sweep some lip gloss over it – use a cotton bud when going over the sore.

What next?
You need to throw away your toothbrush. This will carry the virus and every time you clean your teeth you will be transferring the virus to your mouth.
