You would think that, in this day and age, we had seen the back of sexism – but, no, it seems it is well and truly alive.

This has been evidenced all-too clearly by the ‘sexist’ comments of a British Tory councillor, who slammed a Labour candidate’s chances of being elected MP – because she is expecting a child.

Catherine Atkinson is mum to a two-year-old son and is currently running for election. She also happens to be pregnant with her second child, and due to give birth at the end of July.

When she didn’t mention her pregnancy in her official Facebook page biography, Councillor Wright drew attention to the fact and tried to use it as justification for why – in his opinion – she should not be elected.

Screenshots of the since-deleted comments have unveiled Wright’s views, loud and clear.

“Funny, she never mentioned she was heavily pregnant,” he wrote.

“I wondered how she would represent the people of Erewash [her constituency] whilst on maternity leave? And if it’s no problem, why hasn’t she mentioned it?

“She mentioned her two-year-old son. How can a woman who is just about to give birth take on a role as MP?”

He later added: “It’s my vote, and surely something so big should be discussed. Brexit on the horizon, and she might be too busy changing nappies to be a voice for the people of Erewash.”

Needless to say, followers of the post were outraged by Wright’s comments, and Ms Atkinson took the opportunity to send a strong message of response, in a local newspaper.

Speaking to The Nottingham Post, she said: “If it’s right that a Conservative councillor has said a mum with young children shouldn’t run for Parliament, I have to say I’m not surprised – that’s why they are called the ‘Nasty Party’.

“He should apologise. I require an apology – not for me, I’m used to standing up to bullies – but on behalf of all young mothers out there. They shouldn’t be put off running for Parliament. We need their voice – they are as much members of the community as anyone else.”

Since the fracas went public, there have been calls for Councillor Wright to apologise. He has responded with the following statement, apologising ‘if’ he caused any offence.

“It appears my comments regarding Catherine Atkinson and the fact she is due to have a baby shortly, before or after the election, have caused offence to a few people,” he began.

“I feel I was asking a legitimate question, considering the demanding and time-consuming role of being an MP is.

“If my comment appeared to be sexist or offensive in any way, I unreservedly apologise – it wasn’t meant to be that way.”

Well, what are your thoughts, mums – and don’t hold back!
