A courageous Australian journalist has begun chemotherapy treatment for leukaemia – just days after welcoming her first child into the world.

Elle Halliwell gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Tor Felix, on Tuesday. He tipped the scales at 6lbs 8oz.

The 31-year-old made headlines back in May, when she discovered that she was pregnant – just two days after being diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia.

While doctors urged Elle to begin life-saving chemotherapy treatment immediately, the journalist refused to put her baby’s life in danger and vowed to wait until he had entered the world.

She explained the current state of play to the Daily Telegraph: “We were going to have a bit more time before (starting chemo) but my levels have gone up a bit, so they are a bit more concerned than they were. That is why we had to have him at 36 weeks on the dot, and not 37 – so that I could start the treatment as soon as possible.”

“If I am healthy, then I can keep him healthy. We are both very lucky. All is well that ends well. We are really over the moon,” added Elle, who is married to Nick Biasotto.

While Elle doesn’t know what lies ahead for her and her family, she admitted that she is ‘feeling positive’.

“I have got a lot to be happy and healthy for,” she said.

We’re wishing Elle all the best with the journey ahead.
