Whether it's your first, second or third baby, no dad wants to miss the moment their little one arrives into the world.

But sadly, oftentimes due to circumstances out of their control, not all fathers can be there for the biggest day of both their and their partner's life.

And that is exactly what happened to Ben Squiers who was a plane ride away when his wife, Sam, gave birth at 32 weeks.

Day 35 of purple recliners! One day closer to seeing the tail end of Purple recliners

Ben was in Sydney when the day before Sam's scheduled 32-week scan she developed severe pre-eclampsia.

This was quickly followed by a mad dash to Mater Mothers' Pregnancy Assessment Centre at 2:30am.

"It soon became an intense race against time to save both Sam and Immi," Ben explained to Kidspot, before adding he was in a different race against time: to get to the hospital before his daughter was born.

Sadly, while the father did manage to catch the first flight back, he was, unfortunately, too late to his daughter's birth, and as he was waiting for take-off Ben received a picture of his little girl via text message.

"In the space of 15 minutes the situation changed from ‘we will wait for you, but we can’t guarantee it’, to ‘we can’t wait, Sam is going into surgery’," he explained.

"Twenty minutes later (whilst I was sitting on the plane awaiting take-off) I got a text from an unknown number – a photo of my daughter. I lost it!"
