Huge congratulations are in order this morning following the news that a much-loved singer and performer has given birth.

Karen O, the lead singer of American rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, took to Instagram earlier today to reveal she has welcomed her first child into the life she shares with husband Barney Clay.

Overcome with emotion, the new mum treated fans and followers to a sneak peek of family life by uploading a beautiful snap of her little boy resting against his mum's shoulder.

Admitting she struggled to articulate the intensity of her feelings, the 36-year-old star wrote: "Shortly after we brought him home, I held him in my arms and listened to Roberta Flack singing this tune."

"I felt my heart exploding in my chest with a love I couldn't begin to put into words," she admitted.

Referring to iconic song The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, the popular singer went on to include the lyrics in her touching post, writing: "The first time ever I saw your face, I thought the sun rose in your eyes."

"And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave, to the dark amd endless skies my love, to the dark and endless skies." she finished.

The singer, who revealed she was expecting at the 30th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Show in April, has been inundated with messages of support and warm wishes since the upload earlier today.

Paying tribute to the new mum who wed husband Barney in 2011, one fan wrote: "Congrats Karen!! He looks beautiful and no doubt you'll be a wonderful mother."

Echoing the star's initial touching sentiments, another fan agreed: "It's the most amazing love ever. Enjoy enjoy enjoy!"

Huge congratulations to the very happy family!
