Cataracts in newborns block their vision and as a result can impede their visual sense from developing. A quick diagnosis ensures that there will be no permanent loss of vision. Fortunately, when your baby is born your paediatrician will examine red reflexes( when a light is shone into the eye a red light should be reflected back) immediately after birth and again at their six week visit.

The paediatrician will look at the pupil and shine a light into the pupil which should result in a red light being reflected back. The reflective red light will tell you that the light is getting into the eye and getting back out. If the red reflex is normal, then there are no cataracts. Blood tests and X-rays may also be required to determine for definite the presence of cataracts. If they are discovered then treatment is initiated immediately.
