It is recommended that children have their first eye exam at six months and a repeat exam by the age of three. Bringing your child to regular eye exams is the best way to detect hyperopia. School screenings do not typically detect hyperopia so it is imperative that you schedule regular eye exams. Your optician or optometrist will be able to conduct a refractive evaluation to determine whether your eyes focus light rays exactly on the retina at a distance or up close. This will involve the optometrist slipping various lenses in and out of your child’s field of view. This will indicate whether your child is nearsighted or farsighted.
