The proud mum of an openly gay young man, much-loved Hollywood star, Sally Fields, recently opened up about the pitfalls a parent should avoid when learning of their child's sexuality, and offered some sage advice to the parents of other LGBT individuals.

Speaking in a SiriusXM interview, the Mrs. Doubtfire star, expressed shock over the way in which some children are treated by their parents upon coming out, saying: “Some people actually shut their children out of the house when they’re young."

Horrified by the kneejerk reaction some families exhibit to news they may not have been expecting, Sally continued: "They’re teenagers - they’re having a hard enough time trying to… own any part of sexuality. I’m still trying to figure it out!"

Acknowledging that the revelation may come as a surprise, the 69-year-old actress encourages parents to keep an open mind, saying: "Don’t be frightened, and don’t put your own prejudices or fears about sexuality on your children."

Speaking of her own son, Sam, the Oscar-winning actress reveals that her child initially struggled with his sexuality, telling hosts: "In Sam’s case, certainly, nature told him what to be. It wasn’t something he looked to be, and he found it difficult to grapple with."

"Sexuality is a human, glorious part of existence," she continued as she reflected on her son's personal journey. "I welcomed him to welcome himself, and find that part of his life.”

In words which are bound to resonate with anyone who has struggled to accept their own sexuality, Sally concluded by saying: "It’s not against nature if nature has actually done thisSam was always Sam, this wonderful human that he is, from the time he was born."

We couldn't agree more.
