Mum-of-two Jayne Hynes recently launched Kiddyum, a frozen meals brand for young children, after winning a start-up business initiative with Sainsbury’s.

Spending years working as a chartered surveyor, Jayne started the idea for Kiddyum while weaning her kids, after dishing up two separate version of the same meals - one with seasoning, one without. And as a working mum, she was also already a fan of batch-cooking.

MummyPages recently spoke to Jayne about setting up her own business, and her advice will be INVALUABLE to a lot of mums.

Being a mum of two girls, aged five and eight, Jayne knew all too well the need to find a work/life balance that worked, admitting that it is something that is really hard to find.

However, the one thing that she absolutely recommends is to be organised and strict with your time – to her that means only being away from home once a week and always being back by 6pm.

Admitting that while she is working more hours now than when she was as a chartered surveyor, Jayne believes "it’s better" as she's not stuck in set hours.

“Children grow up so quickly, and I can always get work time back,” she explained.

1. When it comes to setting up your own business, what does Jayne recommend?

  1. Do your research
  2. Know that something will suffer – for Jayne this was her social life
  3. Know your priorities from day one
  4. Set goals
  5. And don’t deviate from these goals
  6. Talk to your local bank
  7. Meet with someone who already has started their own business
  8. Persevere

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Jayne, who experienced massive setbacks, and it was her perseverance and not having the option of turning back that kept her going.

2. So what is Kiddyum exactly?

Kiddyum produce children’s ready meals for those at Stage 3 weaning. Made with all natural ingredients and only British meat and dairy, they don’t contain any nasty ingredients and are sold frozen to lock in all their goodness.

Using recipes that she has already served her two young children (who are also taste testers), Kiddyum products - available from Sainsbury's - are healthy and nutritious, and perfect for one to four-year-olds.

3. So what’s the future for Kiddyum?

Well, Jayne will be adding a new recipe to her range: tuna pasta bake – the winning recipe from her Facebook competition.

Cooking jam tarts at just 18-months-of-age and with a father who used to be a baker, Jayne clearly has found her calling.
