When your child starts secondary school, they won’t be the only ones trying to make new friends, you will too. However, it’s a lot harder to meet other mums when your teen wants to make their own way to school and are too old for playdates.

But this doesn’t mean you can’t meet new people, you just have to approach it a little differently.

1. Get involved

Join the parents’ council, volunteer for afterschool events or be class rep, anything that means you are involved in the school and regularly attending meetings with other parents. You don’t need to solely focus on joining things associated with your son or daughter’s year, you never know who you’ll meet in the years above your child's.

2. Go to matches

Try to go to as many matches that your child plays in as possible: Saturday morning, Wednesday afternoon games it doesn’t matter as long as you start a conversation with the other parents there.

3. Drop and collect

One of the easiest ways to meet new people and connect with the others mums in your child’s year is to drop and collect them before and after school. While this is not something all parents can do or all teenagers want their parents to do, it is a great way to establish a connection with others.

4. Have a coffee morning or a supper

Do it in the name of charity or a general get together! You don’t need to invite every parent in your child’s year, just stick to their friends’ mums or dads and build up relationships that way.

5. Car pool

You drop and collect one week and they do it the next. Not only will this make your life a lot easier, but you will build up a relationship with at least one parent. It’s a great idea if you are feeling shy or intimated by meeting too many people at once.
