The heartbroken family of a much-loved MTV star have expressed their grief in an emotional statement following his death by apparent suicide this week.

Sam Sarpong, a London-born model and TV presenter, who moved to California with his father at the age of 11 before embarking on a career which saw him feature in more than fifty five television shows, including Carmen The Hip Hopera, Love Don't Cost a Thing, and Keeping Up with the Steins, appears to have taken his own life on Monday.

It is understood that the 40-year-old, who is the brother of much-loved British television presenter June Sarpong, died after jumping off a bridge in Pasadena at the beginning of this week.

Providing a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Sam's family shared their grief and thanked fans and followers for their support during this incredible difficult time.
 


"It is with great sadness that the family of Samuel Sarpong, Jr. must share the news that Sam has passed away. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation and no additional details are known at this time," it began.

"Information about final arrangements will be forthcoming. The family appreciates the thoughts, prayers and other expressions of sympathy, and request their privacy be respected at this extremely difficult time."

Finishing the statement, the family wrote: "Samuel Sarpong Jr. is survived by his father Samuel Sarpong Sr., and his sister June Sarpong. Sam Sarpong was 40 years old. Sam Passed away on Monday, October 27, 2015 at 3:50 p.m. in Pasadena California."
 


Commenting on the untimely passing of the star, who fronted MTV show Yo Mama with That 70s Show star, Wilmer Valderrama, Police Chief Phillip Sanchez said: "It is sad and troubling when an individual has become so despondent that he or she feels their only option is to end their life."

Expressing his condolences to the Sarpong family, he continued: "These incidents can often have a significant impact on the victim's loved ones, first responders, and the community as a whole. My prayers go out to the family."
