Experiencing injustice in your life or career is difficult enough to handle, without having to wait three whole decades for an apology.

This was the case for actress and former Miss America, Vanessa Williams, however.

The mother-of-four was appearing at the Miss America ceremony this week when she finally received an apology for being pressured into giving up her title in 1984.

Vanessa found herself caught up in a public scandal when nude photos of her were printed in a magazine – without her consent.

The competition’s chairman, Sam Haskell, decided to put the situation right this week, and he brought Vanessa up on stage to share the moment with the world.

“I’ve been a close friend to this beautiful and talented lady for 32 years. You have lived your life in grace and dignity, and never was it more evident than during the events of 1984 when you resigned,” he said.

He continued: “Though none of us currently in the organisation were involved then, on behalf of today’s organisation, I want to apologise to you and your mother, Miss Helen Williams.”

Vanessa formed part of the judging panel that selected this year’s winner, Betty Cantrell.
