While she is rarely seen without a smile on her face, whether behind the microphone or on the red carpet, this famous mum-of-two has had one of the toughest years of her life.

Now, presenter and current Strictly Come Dancing competitor Kirsty Gallacher has shed light on her ordeal since announcing her split from husband Paul Sampson.

The couple, who have two sons together, ended their 14-year marriage last year, finalising their divorce in early 2015.

In an interview with The Telegraph, the 39-year-old said: “It has been a very difficult year, but then I am no different to any other woman or man who goes through divorce. It is just not a pleasant thing to go through.”

Admitting that she was approached to do Strictly last year but turned it down on the grounds it would have been “far too stressful”, Kirsty said that the competition has boosted her confidence following a traumatic few months.

“It is a really important learning process for me, for getting back my confidence after a difficult year. It sounds deep, but it’s true,” she explained.

Kirsty is partnered by Strictly favourite Brendan Cole on this year's show.
