Our hearts went out to the wife of British Prime Minister, David Cameron, recently as she spoke of the struggles she faced raising a disabled child and the inordinate grief she experienced at his tragic passing in 2009.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday's You magazine, Samantha Cameron eloquently expressed herself when discussing her little boy, Ivan.

In an admission which many parents of children with special needs may relate to, the businesswoman said: "Looking after a disabled child pushes you to the limits of what you can cope with…physically, emotionally."

Explaining her relationship with Ivan, who suffered from both epilepsy and cerebral palsy, the 43-year-old mum said: "There’s this baby, this child that you love more than you can possibly imagine, in some way more than a normal child because you worry about them 24 hours a day. But at the same time you are so, so proud of them."

Struggling to cope with Ivan's diagnosis, Samantha admitted that she found the experience 'isolating', admitting: "You're living in a completely different world to your friends who've had babies at the same time."

Deciding to reflect on the impact her eldest son's death had on her, Samantha who is also mum to Nancy, Arthur and Florence, said: "It happened so quickly. We had built our entire lives around him and suddenly he’s not there anymore"

Admitting that the grieving process was at times unbearable, Samantha explained: "It takes a long time before you see sunlight poking through the dark fog but never does the pain go as it’s so connected to the love."

We think Samantha's strength and courage is admirable beyond measure.
