There was widespread shock when Angelina Jolie announced that she was filing for divorce, but matters turned even more dramatic when it emerged that Brad Pitt was being investigated for alleged child abuse.

Following a formal investigation, however, the FBI has today confirmed that Pitt will not face any criminal charges over the allegations.

A statement released in the early hours of this morning read: “In response to allegations made following a flight…carrying Mr Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI has conducted a review of the circumstances and will not pursue further investigation.”

“No charges have been filed in this matter,” a rep added.

Sources close to the couple claimed that Pitt was ‘abusive’ towards eldest child Maddox, 15, during a private family flight from France to Los Angeles.

Girl, Interrupted star Jolie added further fuel to the fire with a statement touching on the investigation of her estranged husband.

Jolie’s rep told the media: “Angelina said from the beginning that she felt she had to take action for the health of the family and is relieved that, after their eight-week involvement, the Department of Child and Family Services is now satisfied the safeguards are put in place that will allow the children to heal.”

Jolie and Pitt are set to enter into a custody battle over their six children, with the actress seeking full physical custody, and Pitt looking for joint custody.
