Gender neural names are on the rise, especially among millennial parents, according to Linda Murray from Babycenter

"We're definitely seeing more conversation today around the distinction of a truly gender-neutral name," she said recently.

"This generation is truly interested in gender neutral names."

But the reasons people opt for a name that is neither male nor female vary for parents.

For Lori Kinkler from Texas deciding to call her daughter Riley was based on the fact that gender is fluid.

"Of all the difficulties faced by those who live beyond, or across, the binary, we didn't want name-changing to be one of them," Lori told WRAL.com.

"I like that she feels she has options and knows she'll be accepted by us no matter what."

Pamela Redmond Satran, co-author of The Baby Name Bible and Cool Names for Babies says that while that is an important reason, it's not the only one.

"In fact, a lot of people choose unisex names because they think they're cool or they're meaningful to themselves but they raise their kids in a very gender-specific way."
