She wanted to educate her followers about Down syndrome: “October is Down syndrome awareness month. Here’s a little info. 1 in 700 babies is born with Down syndrome.”

The actress explained that language is important. “Parents don’t have a one in 700 “RISK” of having a baby with Down syndrome.”

She stressed how we need to stop using the word risk when speaking about Down syndrome: “Parents have a one in 700 CHANCE of having a baby with Down syndrome, just like they have a 50 percent CHANCE of having a girl and a 50 percent CHANCE of having a boy. (With some beautiful variations in there as well).”

The mum reminded the public that there is nothing wrong with being different. She shared: “Differences are beautiful. Language changes how people think. Words are important.”

She added the hashtags “#hitthejackpot #theluckyfew #nothingdownaboutit,” to the end of her moving post.

The Canadian actress couldn’t have said it better. We all need to work harder at using the right language when speaking about Down syndrome.

October marks Down Syndrome Awareness Month. This month we celebrate the people with Down syndrome and their achievements.
