Heading back to college is a huge decision, especially when you have a toddler at home who needs quite a lot of your undivided attention, and is one that should not be taken lightly. However, it is a hugely rewarding thing to achieve and while it may be hard at times, it will be fun, invigorating, and totally worth it!

So whether you are considering going back or are already there and need a helping hand to get you through the last few months, the following advice will help you.

1. Read your books as bedtime stories

It can be hard to fit in studying time and quality time with your baby, but you can combine the two at certain times. When it comes to bedtime, small kids just love to hear the sound of their mum’s voice, so why not read them your college books. This way you’ll be learning a little and spending good quality time with your kids.

2. Acknowledge that some days you will have to survive on a few hours sleep

They say things happen in twos and when you have a test the next day your little one is guaranteed to not not settle! Instead of stressing yourself, acknowledge that you won’t be getting much sleep and you’ll instantly feel better – your toddler definitely won’t nod off if you are up to ninety.

3. Get your routine down to a tee

It is vital that you have a routine that actually works for your college schedule and your family life - this is the most important thing that you can do. It may take a little bit of time and figuring out to finally get a routine down that works so don't be afraid to swap and change things if they aren't working. Once you have it nailed down, you'll feel organised and better able to handle both family life and your studies.

4. Tell yourself that you can do

Seriously, telling yourself that you can do it will get you through the really hard times and keep you motivated right to the end of the semester. Every morning give yourself a pat on the back, look in the mirror, tell yourself that you are amazing and you will feel a MILLION times better.

5. Give them 'homework' when you have to study

If you do have a lot of work to do and your toddler is not going down for a nap anytime soon and you can't call on family to look after them, have them do some 'homework' with you. Set up a table with an area for you and an area for them, give them a few pens, pencils and paper and assign 'work' that you need them to do - they'll happily sit there while you get your work done.
