A devastated couple form Arizona who discovered that their son was born without eyes are hoping that one day their little boy will be able to see.

Staff at Arizona's Banner Desert Medical Centre were astounded to discover that the infant had been born suffering from an extremely rare condition known as Anophthalmia which revealed the reason why the tot's eyelids would not open.

The devastating discovery was made thirteen days after little Richie's birth when his concerned mother Kelly Lopez brought him for an MRI scan.

Richie, who is now three months old, has been fitted with expanders which should allow the child to hold prosthetic eyeballs in the future, but difficulties have already presented in that regard.

Kelly relived the moment one of the expanders fell out and she struggled to help her son, saying: "I got it in and then I just cried."

The optimistic couple are determined, however, not to give up hope that their little boy will one day see, saying; "I know that researchers are testing it and doing what they can, but I do hope that one day, they'll be able to grow an eye or transplant an eye."
