Colds and flus are rampant throughout the winter months, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept the fact that your toddler will probably catch something. There are numerous ways to ensure your little one is happy and healthy right through to spring and beyond.

These five tips will help your son or daughter fight viruses that not only put them out of action for a few days but are frustrating to deal with.

Wrap them up well

Make sure your little one is wrapped up well whenever they go outside; pop a hat on their head and zip their coat right up. While this won’t necessarily stop them catching something it will go a long way to ensure their immune system stays healthy.

Wash their hands

Wash your hands and your little one’s hands whenever they come in from the garden, are finished playing and before they eat any food. This is even more important when someone in the household has a cold.

Give them lots of vitamins

Make sure your little one is getting enough vitamins and minerals by giving them a healthy balanced diet full of fruit and vegetable.

Make sure they get plenty of rest

Ensure your toddler is getting the right amount of naps and are getting the recommended 12 hours sleep in order to keep them healthy. Your little one’s body needs plenty of rest especially if they are spending the day running around. A lack of sleep can make your son or daughter more vulnerable to catching a cold.

Avoid going near sick people

One of the easiest ways to catch a cold is off someone else. As much as you can, try to prevent your little one coming into contact with others who have a cold.

What to do if they have a cold

If your little one does come down with something, the best thing for them is plenty of rest. Give them lots of fluids and ibuprofen if they have a slight temperature. If you are concerned or they can’t seem to shake it, take them to see your GP.
