In Finland, the Government gives expectant mothers a box before they give birth.

The box is filled with plenty of newborn essentials and has allowed the country achieve one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world.

But what exactly is this box?

Well, it started in the 1930s

Back in the early nineties, the Government started to give out the boxes to expectant mothers to ensure all children received an equal start in life, no matter what their family background was. While initially they were just given to those of a low socio economic background a the start, this changed in 1949 so everyone could avail of one.

What’s inside the box?

Inside the box, new mums will find babysuits, nappies, sleeping bag, bathing products and even outdoor gear. It also contains a small mattress and bedding which allows the box be transformed into Baby’s first bed.

New mums will also find the following items:

  • Cloth nappy set and muslin squares
  • Picture book
  • Teething toy
  • Bra pads
  • Condoms

Do you HAVE to accept the box?

While the box is certainly a great invention, new mothers can opt to take a cash grant of €140.00 instead, but most choose the box as it has a higher value. Well, we know what we'd choose that's for sure!
