Amid the devastating tragedy that unfolded in Mexico City this week, when a gas tank exploded outside of a maternity and children’s hospital, some good news has emerged.

According to reports, nine babies were pulled from the rubble alive and, after undergoing DNA tests, have been reunited with their mothers.

The babies were among those inside the building when the explosion occurred, shattering a significant part of the hospital and resulting in the deaths of a nurse and two infants.

While early reports had set the death toll at at least seven, hospital officials later confirmed that this was incorrect.

Emergency services and passers-by searched through the rubble for survivors of the horrific blast at Cuajimalpa Hospital, managing to rescue the nine babies who were just a few hours old.

After carrying out tests to identify the children, the hospital staff began reuniting the babies with their parents this weekend.

The city’s mayor, Miguel Angel Mancera, said that a number of the babies who survived the blast did so because their mothers shielded them with their own bodies.

Our hearts go out to all that were affected by this devastating tragedy.
