It was back in 2011 that his son experienced a highly publicised meltdown, and now Hollywood legend Martin Sheen has opened up on how the incident impacted upon him.

Discussing son Charlie’s very public breakdown, The Departed star told Radio Times magazine that the debacle left him feeling absolutely “powerless”.

The 74-year-old admitted: “What he was going through at that time, we were powerless to do much, except to pray for him and lift him up.”

“You try to be as present as possible. But you have to be aware of the circumstances. You have to be aware of many things that the public is not aware of…this is a very lonely man, in a very desperate situation,” added the father-of-four.

Explaining the reason behind Charlie’s erratic behaviour, which ultimately led to him being fired from his TV show Two and A Half Men, Martin said it was down to “too much testosterone cream” and “a bit of a ‘roid rage”.

Reflecting on his own struggle with alcoholism and how it helped him to empathise with his son, Martin revealed: “I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t have very, very deep feeling for him. And there’s something that I understand about that, something the programme (AA) has taught me that’s vital in trying to help someone – you can assure them you’re there and you love them, but you cannot effect change.”

Charlie himself has previously blamed an overdependence on testosterone cream as the cause of his troubles four years ago.
